Wheelchair Lift FAQs: Everything you need to know
A wheelchair lift makes your house safer and more convenient, and can be essential in helping you remain independent in your own home. Check out our most frequently asked questions about wheelchair lifts:
A vertical platform lift consists of 3 main components:
1. Lift tower with a hydraulic or ball screw drive mechanism
2. Platform with solid sides that attach to the lift tower and moves vertically (up or down)
3. Key operated controls to operate the unit
Typically, between 4’-10’ for residential spaces. There are some commercial units that can travel up to 14’ when built in a hoistway.
The vertical platform lifts we offer are powered by normal AC current, with an option to upgrade to a continuous charging DC battery-power motor. Choosing the battery-powered unit can be advantageous as it will provide several “round trips” in the event of a power outage. A platform lift with AC power will not run if there is an electrical outage.
A concrete pad at a minimum is required for the installation of a wheelchair platform lift to enable proper & safe use of the unit. There may also be additional work required to install the landing gate and run electric to the lift.
The cost of wheelchair platform lift will vary depending on the configuration/model, site prep, permits and added safety options. On average, prices range from $12,000-$35,000. A wheelchair lift is a viable ramp alternative in providing safe access to a home or building. When space is a limited or the entry barrier is above a certain height, a wheelchair lift is the better solution.
The wheelchair platform lifts we offer are equipped with weather-resistance controls and have a specialized coating that protects the unit from outdoor elements. In colder climates, an optional cold-weather package is available as well.
No. The terms Wheelchair Lift, Porch Lift, and Vertical Platform Lift, (VPL for short) all refer to the same type of product. The term Porch Lift is common because this type of lift is ideal for providing access from ground level to a porch or deck where a ramp is not feasible.
